Medically Induced Coma

A temporary coma brought on by a controlled dose of a drug.

Used to:
- Protect the brain during neurosurgery
- During intracranial hypertension following traumatic brain injury
- As a last line of treatment in certain cases of status epilepticus

A barbiturate drug is used to induce a coma - usually pentobarbital or thiopental.
